As part of our study of the needs of living things, their adaptations and habitats all the 2nd graders at Hobble Creek have done owl pellet dissections this week. The students were excited to work like biologists discovering what barn owls eat. We also had a visit from live owls presented by the Great Basin Wildlife Rescue.

5th Grade Students Dissect Squids

Submitted by carol.day on

The squid dissections were really fun. What we did was we got the squid on a platter and we got a pair of mini scissors and some things that could pick up the stuff we found in the squid. We cut open the top of the squid and we looked at what was in the inside of it. We also found the eyes and the tentacles and the arms. On the tentacles, there was lots of suction cups. The arms had suction cups, but not as much as the tentacles. We found the beak and it was squished in all of the arms. When we took out the beak (mouth) It was in the shape of a ball. I would have never suspected it would be like a ball. We got to take out the eyeballs and we found out the eyeballs were on the side of the head! We got to see the brain and the ink sak. The ink sak was really cool because I thought it would be a ball but it was something that looked like a fin. We got to cut open the stomach and one of the groups found a dead fish in theirs! We also found the heart of the heart of the squid and at the beginning, we pulled out a thing that looks like plastic that the squid naturally grows in its body. And luckily, there was no blood because they put on something that makes it so there isn’t any blood. Squid dissections were really fun! --Eli Sweat Miss Johnson, 5th Grade

The 2nd and 4th graders were able to have Owls visit our students!

The white owl pictured is a Barn Owl and the larger brown owl is a Horned Owl.  Fun fact about this larger owl is that its mother is one of the Owls from Harry Potter! It weighs 12 pounds and isn't even full grown yet! It has a wing span of 6 feet! The Horned Owl is from Russia! Its only counter part is the Golden Eagle.  They do not bother each other because the Golden Eagle feeds during the day and the Owl feeds at night!
