Mrs. Karen Warren Is The Hobble Creek Classified Employee of the Year

Submitted by liz.porter on

Karen Warren, our assistant secretary here at Hobble Creek, was awarded the Classified Employee of the Year award May 15, 2017

Karen was born and raised in Springville. Her parents are Clyde and Kathleen Gabbitas. After graduating from Springville High School Karen started working at Central Bank and then in 1992 she married Ryan Warren. They lived in Springville for 6 years until 1998 when they moved to Mapleton.

Karen has 4 children, Sarah 11, Lexy 14, Austin 17, and Sabrina 20. Sabrina is currently serving a mission in Rancagua Chile for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.   She has always been involved with her kids and school, whether it be volunteering in the classrooms or on the PTA. Karen loves to read, ski, watch movies, go out to eat, go on vacation. She enjoys camping and spending time in the mountains as long as she can stay in a trailer, which we don’t have. Her favorite place to eat is Joe Bandidos where she gets the chicken chimichanga every time. Her favorite candy is black Twizzlers and Necco wafers. She loves Dr. Pepper.

Christmas is her favorite holiday and she loves to setup little forests and Christmas decorations throughout the house, along with listening to Christmas music. She can’t wait for the Christmas season to begin each year. After being a stay at home mom for nearly 15 years she decided it was time to jump back into the workforce. While she wanted to go back to work, she still wanted to be accessible and at home when the kids came home from school or needed to be ran to appointments. She loved volunteering in the classrooms and working with the teachers and staff at Hobble Creek, and decided that is where she would like to try to get a job. After missing out on a couple of opportunities, she was able to be hired by Mr. Johnson as the Computer Tech aid, she fell in love with working with and getting to know all of the students.

Karen is very dedicated, determined, and a hard worker. She always pays attention to details. She is easy to get along with and enjoys working with others. Karen is grateful for the friendships and opportunity she has to work at Hobble Creek and associate with all the wonderful teachers, students, and staff.  She is especially thankful to Mr. Johnson for giving her this opportunity and Linda Baird for taking the time to mentor her, show her the ropes, and train her on her responsibilities. She truly loves going to work each day and working with such wonderful people. She loves being a Hobble Creek Hawk!

Amanda Flake is the current music specialist, and next year she will teach 1st grade.  She said, “I love all types of music, so it made me happy to teach music every day, but my favorite part of my job was getting to know every student in the school.  I will really miss being the music specialist, but I am excited to teach 1st grade because I love the magic that comes with teaching young children.  My favorite part of teaching is thinking of ways to make things more fun and active. I think 1st grade will be a good fit for me.”  Mrs. Flake graduated from BYU with her degree in Elementary Education and also studied music and Spanish.  She and her husband live in Mapleton and have 5 kids who have all attended Hobble Creek.  She loves traveling, reading, hiking, playing the piano, eating Thai food, and spending time with her family.  Her favorite colors are teal and purple, and she loves accessories, especially colorful scarves. Some of her favorite book series are Fancy Nancy, The Little House on the Prairie, Fablehaven, The Candy Shop Wars, Harry Potter, and The Reckoners series by Brandon Sanderson.

We are lucky to have such amazing the dedicated teachers here at Hobble Creek, thanks for making our school great Mrs. Flake!

Today we are spot lighting our Hobble Creek 6th grade team. Every student at Hobble Creek looks forward to their 6th grade year and the teacher they will get. Since all the teachers are equally fantastic it is never a dissappointment and all 6th graders enjoy being king of the hill so to speak! This being said, we are so sad to say good bye to Mrs. Snow, Mrs. Nissen and Mrs. Smith. Each are being taken in different directions next year and they will be missed. Mrs. Corfield will be staying! Yay!! Here are some interesting fact on all of them.

Mrs. Lisa Nissen says, "I'm a California native who feels like flip flops should be the only shoe to wear.  I have four children and all of them are Hobble Creek Hawks.  I love this school and wanted to give my two cents to the community by teaching.  I've been teaching sixth grade for seven years.  I graduated with my bachelors in elementary education in 1995 from BYU.  I love spending time with my husband and kids.  Some of my favorite trips include four-wheeling up at the Nissen family ranch in southeast Idaho." Mrs. Alisa Corfield says, "I have enjoyed teaching here at Hobble Creek for the past 2 years. Previously, I taught for 6 years in the Provo School District.  I grew up in Provo and now live in Springville.  I enjoy watching my students and own children learn and grow.  I am a BYU fan and enjoy traveling to exciting places with my family.  I have been married for 24 years and have 3 children.  I am excited to be returning to Hobble Creek next year." Mrs. Jayme Smith has taught sixth grade at Hobble Creek Elementary for all nine years of her teaching career. She has taught an estimated 250 kids over the years, and can still remember all of their names and loves hearing from them as they have grown older! Sadly, this will be her last year teaching at Hobble Creek so she can go and be "mom" instead of Mrs. Smith.  She is sad to leave, but is excited to start this new chapter of her life!" Some of Mrs. Smiths favorites are the color Black, Harry Potter, football and soccer. She loves to sleep in and would love to learn to hula dance. She likes all things cheese and going on vacation with her hubbie. Mrs. Alison Snow says she has enjoyed her time teaching children at Hobble Creek for the last 7 years.  She will be leaving Hobble Creek this year and wants to thank all who have been so kind and helpful throughout all the years spent here.  "It has been a joy to learn and grow with my students.  I will cherish many memories of amazing times had with awesome families, students, & faculty at Hobble Creek.  From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!" Mrs. Snow likes the colors blue and black, Harry Potter Illustrated edition, volleyball and vanilla cake. She loves soup, is really good at baking and cooking, loves to travel and visit new places. She would like to learn how to make blueberry pie and loves when people are nice to each other. Thank you to all of our 6th grade teacher who really have a hard job and work really hard each day to make sure the 6th graders will be ready to leave the nest!

If you haven't noticed there will be a lot of changes to our faculty next year. Mrs. Kristen Ontiveros is going to Sage Creek Elementary to teach 2nd grade and we will miss her terribly. Mrs. Jessica Ribble is going to be our full time kindergarten teacher.

Mrs. O says, "I began my teaching career at Hobble Creek. I have loved being able to help students read for the first time. They get so excited. It is going to be hard to leave Hobble Creek because of the friendships I have made with the students, faculty, and community. The one thing I will treasure the most is walking down the hallway and hearing a students yell, "Mrs. O" I will really miss that the most. I want to thank Hobble Creek for helping me become the educator I am today. "

Mrs. O's favorite color is yellow, her favorite book is Anne of Green Gables, she loves softball, watermelon and red velvet cake. She is really good at cheering for her daughters during their softball games and loves to travel with her family. She hopes to run a marathon this summer and would love to learn how to surf. Her wish is that every child could have a loving home. Sage Creek is sure lucky to have you Mrs. Ontiveros and you will be missed!

Mrs. Jessica Ribble has been at Hobble Creek for 3 years and is excited to now teach AM and PM classes.  She is from CA and came to BYU where she met her husband and stayed in Utah. She earned her early childhood education degree at BYU and thought she would teach special ed. She ended up teaching preschool instead for 14 years. Mrs. Ribble just graduated from SUU with her Master's in Education. She is a dedicated scouter as well and has her Wood Badge. She goes to scout camp every summer with her family. She loves the color purple, she loves to read a lot of different kinds of books. She is a BYU sports fan and loves ice cream cake. She is really good at sewing and loves to spend time with her family. Everyone thinks she is funny when she uses different voices when telling a story. This summer she is going to California for a few weeks and would love to learn to rock climb. She wishes everyone could love reading.
