Science Fair Winners

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on
We had approximately 115 students complete the project and about 43 students that wanted to be judged to see if they would be one of the 8 lucky winners who would advance to the District Science Fair.  We had projects ranging from product testing such as the best popcorn to buy, to what material is the best conductor of heat.  The students that passed to the district from my class were Rylie HInds and John Hagen.  Rylie experimented with the best cup to insulate your hot drink and John discovered how teeth react to certain products such as sugary drinks, milk and water to name a few.  We had parents walking away from the Science Fair saying they learned quite a bit from our incredibly intelligent 6th grade students, and I whole heartedly agree.  They did a super job!!

Repertory Dance Theatre came and taught the students of Hobble Creek about different bench marks of Science and Health through dance. The bench marks were pollution, recycling, water cycle, exercising, eating healthy and much more.  The students even got to dance with with the dancers.  The program started off with the 6th grade dance students doing their dance on the water cycle.  It was very informative and the students at Hobble Creek Elementary loved it!

Green Map Project with Repertory Dance Theatre

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Students at Hobble Creek Elementary are learning about mapping, their community, science and technology through the art of dance from the professional dancers of Repertory Dance Theatre.

Hobble Creek has an art project grant from the Utah Division of Arts and Museums, formerly the Utah Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the arts.  The grant allows them to join into the Green Map Project which is an international effort to create perspective changing portraits of communities that act as practical guides for resident, tourists, decision makers and statisticians.  The Green Map System has spread to over 600 cities, towns and villages in 55 countries.

Repertory Dance Theatre is involved in the community providing  educational opportunities and striving  to increase an awareness of the art of modern dance.  The dance company has been involved in schools in the Salt Lake and Ogden area with the Green Map Project.

At Hobble Creek  fourth and second grade students will be working with RDT to dance science and social study concepts.  Students working with Carol Day have created surveys to
collect information about the gardens, native plants and animals,  and watershed of the area that comprises the school boundaries lying in both Mapleton and Springville.   The information will be used by the dancers and placed on student made maps and onto the online green map.  This is “place-based education which emphasizes creative exploration and the joyful realization of the ties that connect a person with nature and culture in their place.”(David Sobel)

RDT dancers will come to Hobble Creek Friday Mornings Jan 6-March 9.  The company will perform at an assembly for the whole school on January 31 at 10:00 am and the students will present their dances and maps for a culminating event on March 9 at 10:00 a.m.  For any questions you can reach Carol Day at 801-489-2863.

Linda Pugh receives the Crystal Apple

Hobble Creek’s 2011-2012 Crystal Apple goes to Mrs. Linda Pugh, a second grade teacher.  The award was presented by Craig Harvey and is sponsored by Horace Mann Insurance and the Nebo Education Association.  Teachers on the faculty who are members of the association nominate their peers for this award.

Linda was raised in Kearns, Utah.  She graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education.  She has been a teacher for eight years, all at Hobble Creek Elementary.   This past summer, Mrs. Pugh finished an Arts Endorsement through Southern Utah University.  Before coming to Hobble Creek she was a substitute teacher in Jordan and Nebo School District while raising her children.

Linda is married to Michael Pugh.  They are the parents of one son, Matt, and one daughter, Katie.  She resides in Mapleton, Utah.  Linda is a kind and loving teacher who is dedicated to her students.  She is always trying new ideas and lessons to help them further their education and life skills.  Congratulations Linda Pugh!
